From the Crooked Smiley Face

And So I Told Myself...
When I came back from uni at 12pm, I told myself, "You're allowed an afternoon nap, get enough sleep so that you can stay up late. " I slept till four, and napped again at eight.
I woke up to have dinner, I told myself, "You can watch Grey's Anatomy while eating your toast garlic bread but work starts straight away after dinner." After dinner, I washed up, and lay in bed to watch the rest of Grey's Anatomy disc 2.
Today's result? Five hours and I have just finished this pitiful outline. So lazy... you get me?

Why Do You Bother?
Have you ever have one of these nights when a little prompt can either make you smile or frown? I have been thinking again. Dangerous, I know. Possible, you think? Definitely. I felt like a fool most of the time when things like this happened. I tried to put it off but it came back again and again to haunt me. Until I saw it. Ah... it has brought me back to reality once more.
This won't make sense to you. I doubt it will to me next morning. I need sleep.
I like quiet nights like this. If only there's no school tomorrow so that I can stay up till dawn and bombard my blog with tonnes of nonsensical posts.
Today, my favourite colour is blue. Coz it reminds me of Danielle.

Tissue Box
Some really crazy stuff is going on. For GD this semester, we are basically stuck to doing one major project, which will drag on from hence forth till the end of sem. Packaging. Nothing like that Barbie thing I did last sem, but packaging all the same. Another minor assignment is this, design a tissue box. Below is the mock up for my design.
It's a little too big. I will have to fit this in an A2 size paper and the printing of that is superbly expensive, not to mention, absolutely unneccessary for such an insignificant assignment. Not that this is not important, but come on... Am I supposed to fork out 20 bucks just to print a stupid box that's only gonna be sold for what.. rm4++ if you buy four boxes at the same time from Giant?
Will have to minimize it and try keeping it in an A3. A3 printing only cost around six bucks. =D

ps: my GD lect is another living dinosaur. he has tonnes of experience teaching, i guess. but he is sometimes a bit hard to get. so far so good, i guess.
this is my post ke-satu hundred!!!!!!!
over the span of one year~~~
Pink Is The New Blue
We went into the Putrajaya mosque, where we have to be covered from top to bottom in this pink robe. I went there the first time in Form 3 with Rui and HF. It was nicer then coz we were allowed to walk inside within a restricted area, and look up at the dome. But this time around, we were only allowed to linger outside for a mere five minutes.
Haha... these are the people I hang out with here. Pretty, huh? Despite what it looks like in this picture, I am NOT the shortest. A certain someone making a pig face IS the shortest one, and was trying to fool people by standing to the front a little bit more and standing straighter.

939
Yeh, I am offically twenty two years, three hours and 5 minutes old. 22:03:05 Dank. 22 is really a far cry from being 21. It's like two different worlds. When you're 21, it's all shiny and new coz you have finally, entered adulthood. And when 22 comes, the novelty has rightfully wore off, and all that lies in front is this long stretch into the twenties.
I am being a little of a pessimist, huh?
I had a great pre - during - and - post birthday~ thank you so much to everyone who has messaged me through phone, gave me phonecalls, and also all the birthday wishes on Facebook. Pretty awesome getting those notifications of people writing on my wall. For just a moment there, a whole bunch of friends, have given me a thought. Nothing could be better than this (besides a macbook, that is). And a special thank you to Chia Li, for dedicating a post especially for me~ wee~~~ first dedicated post.
I was determined to stay happy on my birthday. Come to think of it, it was my first birthday spent away from home. I didn't get terribly home sicked, thanks to the company of people around me. But I still loved getting those mushy phone calls from my nieces and nephew.
A lot of stuff has happened to make this day into something great. Seeing Kelly again after so many months. She thought she got me the DVD I listed in things I want for birthday, but it was actually the sequel. Nevermind that though, I have wanted to watch Part 2 after the first one. But to think that she actually remembered and cared enough to go look for it, therein lies the priceless gift. And Tze Yee, you know very well what you have done to make this birthday especially memorable for me. Enough face given. Enough said. Thank you girls, it was a great day out and I had fun.
=D
ps: i got a very chocolatey birthday cake~ though it was supremely delicious, may i hope for a tub of ice cream next year?? with candles on it? and my mac book!! don't think i'm giving up on it just yet!!

Regret
Have you watched 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'? It is a movie where a baby was born an old man, and as he ages, he becomes younger. For normal people like us, we are born young and ages forward (duh~). As we get older, there will be times when we look back and see the things we have not done due to the absence of courage or opportunity (or whatever else). This is regret. But for Benjamin Button, earlier in his life, there is a lot of things he cannot do because he is old. When he ages backward, he gains the ability to do the things that he missed out when he was older physically. He gets the chance to do things over and avoids regrets, a case which people like us, can only look on in envy.
When we become old, we regret about the things that we should have done. There is no turning back, just like how there is no turning back time.
There was one moment when I thought of this that I felt a shudder of fear. Will there be a time in the future, when I look back at today, and regret about the things that I should have done. Will there be a day in the future of begrudging myself for not really living in my prime, and merely see it pass. I stand here now in the present, hoping like hell, I have truly lived my life.
Have I? Have you?

What I Want For Birthday Is...

Oh, so you're not friggin' rich or not willing to spend thousands of ringgit just to satisfy my material wants, no worries, there's something for everyone here. Get me a VCD/DVD of Leslie Cheung's movie "He's A Woman She's A Man". I cannot find it anywhere...
Okay... so you do not have the time to look in every shop in Malaysia just to find a movie for me. Don't worry, there's another thing here which is a Fit For All! Borders Gift Card! Put in any amount and I can just purchase anything I want from Borders!
A person cannot get more considerate than this, don't you agree? Get me any of the three things listed and you'll just make my birthday this year. You can send the gift card in from anywhere, no matter you're in Australia or Singapore *hint hint*!!
Yes? Okay? Thank you in advance~~
追
Have you watched Leslie Cheung's "He's A Woman She's A Man", where he costarred with Anita Yuen? If you're interested, go Google the synopsis. The soundtrack of the movie was "追", meaning Chase. Leslie Cheung was the only celebrity whose death I still feel sad after all this time. It was when he sang that song in the movie that I first fell for him. This song evoked both feelings of bliss and sadness for me. Definitely my favourite song and movie by him.
追 Lyrics
追曲:李迪文 詞:林夕 編:George Leong
ps: this is the first time i embed a video in my post!!! hehe~
Flower Power in the Details
Nevertheless, these are some of the pics I took that I'd really like to share.
Those brown little things were ants.
Amazing, isn't it, the colours flowers come in?
This was somewhere in Hibiscus park. It was a shaded area where people can just rest and look at the surrounding flowers. The place was a little unkempt, but I thought it added to the fantasy-dreamy feel there. If you were to be there, you might think it's just some run down spot in the park.
Messy, unkempt, yes. But I thought the place looked pretty.
A wounded butterfly. Amazing colours, though.

Of First Impressions, Gay Guy and Insane Woman
Yeh, I have already met with nearly all my lecturers this semester, save one, the GD lect, whom I am going to meet tomorrow. The last crucial one. The one who is going to make or break this semester. I know I have reinstate on many occasions how lecturers are not really that important and how being spoon fed is something to be done back in secondary school, not university. BUT, a good lecturer can spur me on like no other. A good lecturer inspires and make me feel like performing to impress.
Only five modules this sem. Did so bad last semester that even if I scored four flats throughout the rest of my years here, I will still not be able to reach my ultimate goal. Therefore, that objective crushed. *slap slap* If I cannot shoot for the star, then I shall settle for the moon.
The major I chose was advertising. I met the lect already, the first one. Wahaha... he's so gay~ An incredibly nice guy, I supposed, experienced in his field, I hope, and he's not gay but just looked gayish, I think. He talked a lot. He fileld the entire class hours with talks on advertising and coke and recycling. Besides the occasional yawn, it was interesting, listening to him. I got some pretty good laugh out of that session as well. I like him. Hopefully he lives up to expectations.
Insane woman is going to teach us typography. Insane, why? For the first class, she has already given us places to visit in KL, such as butterfly park, bird park, museums and this and that park/garden/lake. The objective? Collect colour combinations, shapes, symbols and icons. 250 each. You do the calculation. Woman is insane. I am happy with this crazy work. The end product is actually designing a series of dingbats. You know, the kind of fonts that don't show letters but shapes of leaves/ animals/ ornaments instead? She said we can actually apply FontLab, if we know. Dank! No we don't. That (fill in demeaning adjective) lecturer who taught us last sem knows nothing about typography therefore taught us nothing!! Another thing to put into my list of 'Things To Learn On My Own'.
Oh yeah, know what was the first thing I heard from her when I entered the class? "I want soldiers who are here for the fight." I'm serious!
Illustration lect is a different one that the one we usually had. She looked so fresh! And we had the same lect for Socio-Psychology in Design. Wahaha~ can't wait to tell HF I'm gonna be learning psychology... I think. I asked that lect who gave me a B, I think last sem for my Design Heritage paper, on how I can do better in his class. Enough to said the question might as well be better off not asked.
So far so good, the line of lects. Hopefully the GD lect is just as good as first impressions go tomorrow.
ps: I need to get to work!!! will start after i finish watching my gossip girl, grey's anatomy, anime, tvb dramas..... etc... omg.....

Just so you have something to read, Adryn.
Yep. Cyberjaya, hutan, one and the same. I have already lugged all my luggage back into my new room last weekend. It's a mess in there. I dread a little having to face it all again. Haih.
You know life is boring when you can manage to sleep the whole day off and can still feel sleepy. I am embarassed to have to blog on mundane things like this once more. This is just an announcement. Don't mind me.
I look forward to a brand new semester. Will have to decide on a major and I'm hoping I'm making the right choice. As of now, my decision seemed good. Not seeing any potholes if there are any. And if I screw this up just like how I screwed up in my choice of uni, well, cheers to me, you big screwball (by this I mean me, I mean. don't be so touchy, i don't mean you)!!!
Ugh. Getting a horrible bout of home sickness once more. But give me two days there, and once I'm immersed in the routine over there, I am sure I can get this feeling over with. At the thought of boarding Konsortium to Puduraya, I feel sick.
Uek.
No more from me till I'm there and got the lines hooking. So long~

Blog Recolouring
I know fairly little about customizing blog designs so the best I can do now is pick my own colours. Yeah, I know, even an amateur less than an anmateur will know how to do this. But I do like the colours!
This is something which I have thought of doing since the beginning of break. A brand new look to a brand new year!!
This will get better. Better designs, better colours, better themes, better stories. This I promise you. It's nothing much to look at now, I can only hope it gets better. *fingers crossed*

10 Steps To Great Logo Designs
2. Sketch again
3. And again
4. Don’t worry about mistakes
5. Sketch with pencils
6. Try using pens
7. Sketch indoors…
8. …and out
9. Sketch fast
10. Keep on sketching
This is something I'd like to share that I picked up from David Airey, a designer. This is something my lect once taught us too. To make lots of sketches, regardless of papers and pencils, brilliant or stupid ideas.
Hehe... pencil do the thinking, yes?

Wait
Have you ever thought that in many cases the real excitement lie in the waiting? The anticipation? Just right before the moment, you have the liberty to make up anything and have all kinds of expectations. The wait gives us the freedom for imagination. And when the moment arrived, it might be less than what we expect, or maybe more. Anyhow, the wait is always the one that has the ability to fill us either with dread, butterflies or sunshine.
I am waiting. At the slightest hint I choked. It made me wonder how I'll handle it when it's right in my face. But I know that if it happens again, I shall play it differently. I went to sleep with a smile and woke up wondering. I like the feeling. I have gone through it before. The wait. By the end of it, I usually came away the greater fool. What the hell, who cares? No one even knows what I am talking about.

Being Silly
This is one thing I have found out about myself that I am going to adhere to. When I'm angry for no good reasons, or just plain irritable, the best thing to do is lock myself in a room and sleep away the negativity. That way I don't hurt people around me and ultimately, myself.
I find myself having shorter and shorter patience for people and the things they say. I have no patience for people who talked and talked just to fill in the silence. I don't mind if the topic is interesting, but I am as familiar to the subject as I am to the makings of a car engine. The best thing I do is to blank out, and then nod once in a while. The worst is to cut that person off and fill the silence with awkwardness.
Recently I have discovered a new fear. Circumstances and people made me realize it. I don't want it to happen. No. If you wanna do it, then let's do it together. Don't leave me behind.
I should get out more. It will prevent me from thinking too much in this small bubble. Maybe once I see things in a bigger context, the feelings that I have now will be of little importance.
I wish to one day look back at this and laugh at how silly I was.

2009. My Year.
I just had a night out and I thought the first thing I want to do will be to put my head on the pillow. But after a bath, all of a sudden I just wanted to blog.
The night had been a little fuzzy. I was not as excited about the new year as I hoped to be. Anyhow, I did manage to countdown the New Year with my bestest friend in the whole wide world (well, I did make a resolution to be nicer to her). The crowd was huge and the fireworks lame. All in all, okay. The best thing was that we ushered in the new year by watching Eason's new movie in the cinema. It was not the best movie, but it's the first thing I watched for 2009!
Love. Love. Love. Eason Chan.
I have read a few people's blogs. First posts of 2009. A lot of flash backs, reminiscings, and of course, the age old favourite, resolutions. I suggested we give each other resolutions, Hooi Fong and I. Me being me, I couldn't really think of anything good. What she gave me was to make a whole lot of new friends for the new year. Widen my network. Get to know more people. All I can say is that I will try.
Then from here, I came up with my own resolution for 2009. Instead of making new friends, I shall like to get to know my existing friends. Talk more, know more. And not be afraid.
Dear Pencil Do The Thinking has been with me now since April 2008, but I only got serious about it in August, maybe? This lil' bloggie has been with me for less than half a year, but it has accumulated much of my thoughts. For the new year 2009, brace yourself, I will not give you up!
In the very near future, say tomorrow, I shall clean my room. In the quite near future, I will give lil' bloggie here a new look. These are my resolutions. Let's see if I'll break 'em.
Happy 2009!! Be Brave. Be Happy. The new year is a new slate!

Last Post of 2008
You have been a good year. You could have been better.
You gave me an opportunity to finally know what I want, the kind that I want. But you also told me what I want is unreachable. You told me that it is not possible.
You have been a good year where you gave me opportunities to learn and to see people for who they are. You showed me I am not as ideal as I think I am, and aside from people who made me sad, you also made me realize the people that made me happy.
Oh, how funny you have been you big round eight, you made me spend such great time with friends this year that I neglected my family. And then you showed me how fun spending time with my own can be that I in turn spend less time with friends. Okay, I get your drift.
But you have not been spectacular. There is nothing in you that I can specially note of. Nothing in you that can make me say, a year well lived. You are a year without achievement. But then again, jolly old you have been a whole load of fun!
You passed faster than the other twenty. With you, I turned into an adult legally. With you, I finally realized how foolish I once was trying so hard to grow up. I should have taken my time for there's really nothing in adulthood once you are there.
You will go and a whole new you will come. A new you called 2009. I don't know what is lying in store, but I intend for it to be a great year indeed.
Resolutions? I will leave it for next year. You? You're the past now and I will be looking forward to the future.
So long, old you,
Quin.
A Post To Cover It All
Family Outings
My whole family and I went for the Penang Star Walk. A fifteen kilometres walking experience with four kids and the rest of the adults. I think this was the fourth time that I have participated. Maybe it's due to experience, the walk didn't seem as far as before. Of all the kids, Yiyi was the only one who really walked. The rest just sat in the two strollers we bought, eating biscuits and drinking Milo along the way. It was tiring that day and we didn't complete the walk within the given time but at least we FINISHED it with four kids and two strollers in tow!
We went for another outing to Genting Highlands right before the Christmas week. It was a completely different thing compared to going with friends. WhenI went there the last time with friends, it was all about us; going for rides and getting good food. Basically just enjoying ourselves on a time away from home. But going with the families, we have to be concerned about where everyone was and for everything fifteen minutes or so, I had to do a head count just to make sure none of the kids was lost. Looking for a lost kid in Genting will be like searching for needle in a stack of needles (quote courtesy of Garcia of Criminal Minds).
It was so enjoyable going with the kids. Except for Yiyi and Danielle, the rest were there for the first time. However, Yiyi was only two, maybe, at that time and Danielle still a baby, and they both couldn't really recall anything. Everything was new and exciting for them. They never really had cotton candy and been to a theme park. They didn't know what roller coasters really were except that people died sitting on it (courtesy of Final Destination 3).
I made a promise with Yiyi to sit on her first roller coaster ride together. She was afraid but looking forward to it at the same time. Alas, she was not tall enough. Short of another fifteen centimetres, I think. She got disapointed but I think underlaying that pout was a tiny smile of relieve, ahahha... She promised that she will get taller soon so that we could go on the ride together the next time. I told her not to get big so fast and she said, "Then I will grow taller slower." Kids. They are so heart wrenching sometimes.
The best part about this Genting trip was going to the games booth with the kids. I played something like throwing a ball into holes of varying sizes. When I threw one into a big hole, I won Yiyi a notebook. The cheapest of all the prizes. But she threw her arms around my waist, thanking me with a huge smile as if I have won her the jack pot prize. She made me feel very much like a champion.
Mamma Mia...
.. here I go again, my my, how can I resist ya?
Ooo, I went for the stage production of this popular Broadway show.
It. Was. The. Best. Thing. I. Have. Ever. Watched.
It was so freaking good!! The music were so much better than the one in the movie and I already thought highly of the big screen production. Where Pierce Brosnan couldn't sing to save his life, the guy who played Sam Carmichael of the stage production sang to impress. In the show, the other two possibl dads, Bill and Harry, played little roles. But in the real thing, each of them had a scene of their own. This way, their characters carried a meaning of their own instead of being abandoned like they were in the movie.
I was only maybe six rows away from the stage? One very significant difference between the stage show and the movie is my point of view. In the movie, I see everything depending where the camera rolled. In the stage show, I see only one point. Take for example when Donna sang "The Winner Takes It All", she stood on one spot and sang the whole thing with all her heart. From the movie, the camera moved in different directions and took in all the different angles of the one scene. But for the stage show, Donna just stood on that one spot for the period in which she performed that song. It was kinda static for me and it didn't help that I happen to think that song was the least of my favourites. My mom loved that song though.
Ah, I regretted not getting the soundtrack CD from the selling booth. A hint for a belated Christmas present, anyone?? *wink wink*
Of Selling And Dying
I worked solely for Canon during this break. For them, during PC fair, I missed my mom's birthday dinner. I worked for them once more during Christmas for three days. It was truly an experience worth taking.
Despite feeling under appreciated during the Christmas camera fair in Gurney Plaza, it was worth it all to see how those people from Canon worked. There were not the most efficient of people but from them I got some insights on how people can be. There's this manager of some sort that governed us promoters, imagine this. Under this manager are his minions, who go around giving orders from him. If we did anything wrong like talking at work, the devil of a manager will scold his minions whom will in turn come back and warn us.
After standing outside the booth for more than twelve hours, we had to stay back for briefing about the day's performance. I could see everyone shuffling their feet in discomfort while the trusty minions get to lean on the booth while the devil of a manager got to sit on a chair. The manager will ask each of us about the problems that we faced, the kind of customers that come to us and any problems in the competitors' aspect.
However badly I might have portrayed the manager, I do have a certain degree of respect for him in the way he handled the situation. When he gave suggestions on the problem that we faced, he will look at you in the eye and gave it all with such intensity, it was as if he was scolding you. It's not that at all. It's just the way he is that made him good at his work.
But for his minions, that's another thing. They copied the way he speaks. When the leader for this fair briefed us on our performance, the tough and businesslike image he tried to portray was completely spoilt by his constant fiddling of the pen in his hand. A give away of nervousness. And when he spoke, he didn't know how to control his voice for effect. The suggestion he gave back to a simple question sounded as though he was scolding us.
Overall a pretty good experience. I learned a lot on how the more we talk to customers, the more obstacles we will encounter. And the more obstacles, the more solution we will know in tackling it. A workable philosophy in life.

To End It All With A Blast
During Christmas Eve, I got an invitation to a party by both Eve and Hooi Fong. The party was hosted by this group of exchange students whom the both of them interacted with in uni through International Office/Buddies or something.
Anyway, Rui, Chia Li, Chia Yinn and I sort of crashed their parties coz we don't know the host at all. A bit muka tebal of us to go, but yet, it was one interesting celebration to Christmas.
Oooolala~~ plenty of European guys to goggle over. After the party, all us went over whom we talked to and about what. We exchanged opinions on who we think is the best looking and Hooi fong divulged on some info we didn't know.
Yep! Interesting indeed. Haha~~

Puffhh!
Ah, the guilt.
HUGO Create

This is my attempt at an on-going HUGO competition. The aim is to mix and match everything I like about this world and create my own universe. Go figure.. I thought that this is a pretty run off the mill design. Anyhow, am happy that I learn how to create the light beam effect. Wish me luck for this!!

For Mom
This was what I planned to do when I thought I couldn't make it to my mom's dinner. It appears that the time does not clash that much, and I thought this will make a pretty good present for her. I have sort of promised her to do this for a long time. She haven't seen this. Consider yourself lucky to be seeing this first. Haha.. it's just that I was so excited after finishing this portrait that I can't wait to blog about it. It has been ages since I have last touched charcoal. So am feeling pretty good right now.I did this in four hours. It's my mom and dad. Referenced this from a very old picture. But I loved it coz I thought their smiles were beautiful in this. Did this on canvas. I began this by using pencils but it proved to be a mistake. Pencils and canvasses don't go together. Remember. Finished it with a charcoal stick. Love it.
I thought it looked kinda lopsided. I hope there's a little resemblance there to my parents. Not perfect, could be better, and yet I still love it.
ps: I missed blogging in the wee hours of morning. Guess what. I still can't sleep early. Not yet.

Of Selling And Dinner
I can't sell. Never can, never will. All selling genes in the family have gone to my bro. I just hope to get through the fair having sold something on all three days. It will be an excruciating embarrassment to not break the egg.
Darn. The first day of the fair coincides with my mom's bday dinner. She purposely invited everyone from her brothers and sisters to all my cousins. She said maybe I could try asking to work only half day or get permission to leave early. How to ask??? I'll only be working for three days! Might have to miss the dinner. Disappointing for her as well as me. I will have to do something to make up to her then. Something HUGE!!!
Hooked up the computer in my room already! Will be working on some projects of my own. When they are finished, or if they ever get finished, I will, as usual, share it here with you.
Just a little rambling to share before going to bed. Nothing better to do. Bet you're dying for something to read too. Hah....

Greetings From No.12
Anyway, my mom managed to find a job for me and initially, all I had to do was go for the interview and the job will be mine. But I told my mom I wanted to be lazy for another week before doing anything serious, and she said "Take your time". Right. When I called yesterday for an interview, the woman said all positions are frozen for November. Maybe I can try again next month instead. Sh*t.
Well, a good lesson learnt in opportunities lost. It pays pretty well too!! Sheesh.. will try again next month though.
Anyway, I have not been a total slob. Nevermind the fact that I have yet to hook up my comp which an incredibly kind and good Shiau Fung drove all the way back to Penang for me. I have actually got a part time job already. I went for the interview the same day I got rejected for the job my mom recommended. But I have no idea what I'm gonna sell or how much it's going to pay. I have no idea at all.
Hah.. I don't like not getting to blog from my own comp. Feels so inconvenient and the feel of the keyboard not to my liking.
Some of the things I hope to do for these three months will be to earn money and improve my design skills. I WANT MONEY~ shall tell you later of my endeavours in this department.
So long. So all. Ta.
ps: no.12 is my house number, by the way.
